Hanging of the Greens

SUNDAY DECEMBER 4TH
Following the congregational potluck

Join together with your HUU family in the “Hanging of the Greens”

Following the meal we will break into groups to create holiday-yule wreaths, decorate the church, inside and out, bake cookies and drink cocoa, and end with a
carol sing !

There will be activities for every age and stage those making wreaths will be able to take them home and use them to mark the weeks until the holiday

Mark your calendar for Sunday, December 4th and come join the fun!

About the Holiday:

The veil between the worlds grows thin and the passage is easy; so it has been said for centuries, in religious traditions around the world. We step into the realm of mystery and listen for the voices of those who have gone before us, whose footsteps we follow, whose choices made our lives possible.

We honor our beloved dead, our ancestors, friends, lovers, pets, trees; the living beings we have loved and lost. We’ll listen to their voices, hear their messages, and let the light of their inspiration help us shape our lives and the world around us with greater wisdom and clarity. What is remembered lives…

We also honor our descendants, those who have come and will come after us; those who will walk in our footsteps as we inspire them in shaping the future. We listen to their voices and hear their messages bringing more awareness to what we will leave behind, our legacy, and our gifts to the future.

About the Ritual: Please bring photos of beloved dead (ancestors, friends, lovers, family, pets, trees, etc.) to add to our community altar. No cost to attend.

There will also be a workshop help earlier the same day.

About the Workshop – We will explore our connections to our ancestors of blood, spirit and heart, honoring their gifts, sharing their stories, and listening to their wisdom as we create a day of ritual, trance, magic, music, and movement to celebrate their lives and the futures we’ll create in this chain of legacy.

The Southeast Unitarian Universalist Summer Institute or SUSSI for short, is being held July 17 – 23, 2011 in Radford, VA,

You’ll be welcomed warmly and invited into our community. Together, we’ll create a week of conversation, of reflection, of activity, and of family.

You’ll be challenged intellectually and nurtured spiritually. You can stay up all night dancing or making music, and spend all day communing with nature or exploring your personal growth. We have special programs for youth, teens and young adults, so be sure to bring the whole family.

SUUSI is an intentional community of approximately 1,000 people who gather in July to explore our interconnectedness, learn new ways of seeing our world and each other, delight in the joys of meeting old friends and making new ones, share outdoor adventures, dance, and sing.

Soup and Songs with blue stone sky

Come to HUU for a dinner of soups and salads and great music by our own acoustic band, blue stone sky. So many of us wish we could hear more of blue stone sky’s music–and now is our chance!

This will be a potluck dinner. You can sign up to attend and say what you’ll bring at church this Sunday and the next. You also can go to the website PerfectPotluck.com and sign up there. If you’d like to help with this evening of fellowship, please contact Bernie Mathes.

Bill Staines’ Concert at HUU

HUU is hosting a concert by Bill Staines, an extraordinary singer/songwriter, on Sunday evening, January 16, at 7:00. As an added treat our own blue stone sky will open for Bill. Admission is $10. We will be accepting reservations from HUU members and friends first. In October we will open reservations to others. You may make your reservations by emailing Bernie Mathes at bernie@huuweb.org. Payment will be accepted the night of the concert.

Bill Staines is an American folk musician and singer-songwriter from New England, who writes and performs in a traditional vein. Notable Bill Staines songs include “Bridges,” “Crossing the Water,” “Sweet Wyoming Home”, “The Roseville Fair”, “A Place in the Choir”, “Child of Mine,” and “River.” His songs have been recorded by many other artists, including Peter, Paul, & Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Mason Williams, The Highwaymen, Jerry Jeff Walker, and others.

General Assembly (GA) 2011

UUA General Assembly

We invite you to come to the UUA General Assembly (GA) 2011, June 22 – 26, in Charlotte, N.C. This will mark the 50th anniversary of the merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America. Our Thomas Jefferson District is the host for this historic event, and Annette Marquis, our district executive director, has challenged us to send as many members and friends as possible. An added incentive for this GA is that the keynote speaker will be Karen Armstrong, the noted theologian and author of “A History of God.”

We know the costs of attending GA can be prohibitive for some, and so a scholarship fund has been established to help defray the costs for those who need assistance. The fund currently stands at $500, and we hope others will help it grow.

Four people have already signed the chalice at HUU where we are marking our progress in committing to attend the UUA General Assembly next June. As you are ready, we invite you to add your name to the flame of the chalice as we get “fired up” about going to GA in Charlotte in 2011.

As part of GA, you can Experience wonderful and uplifting worship services as well as hear terrific speakers. You might also choose to participate in our democratic process as the business of GA is conducted.
