HUU Scrip Program
The Fuss about Scrip

It’s got a funny name and a relatively short history, but scrip fundraising can be a powerful tool. Want the scoop on scrip? Read on.
Picture this: You make your usual weekly visit to the grocery store (Kroger or
Food Lion). You fill your cart as always — with fresh fruit or frozen french fries,
tenderloin or tofu — and head up front to check out. Your purchases are scanned
and bagged, you get your total, and you pay your $10
0.
Guess what? You just made $3 or $6 for HUU.
How’s that possible? Welcome to scrip, a decade-old fundraising concept with roots in California. The concept is simple. HUU purchases gift certificates/cards, "scrip", from popular retailers (like Food Lion and Kroger) at a discount, which the retailers are happy to give because they’re guaranteeing themselves customers and some goodwill advertising. YOU then buy the gift certificates/cards from Elinor Fankhauser or Barbara Moore at face value. The difference in price is kept by HUU. YOU then spend the scrip at the retailer, where it’s worth the full face value; you haven’t spent an extra dime to help HUU, nor have you had to change stores.
And HUU's earnings can really add up. Some quick math is the best way to demonstrate the earning potential of scrip. An average family spends $5,000 at the grocery store ($100 per week). The church gets a 6 percent discount at Food Lion and 3 percent at Kroger on grocery scrip. Over the course of the year, the HUU makes $150-$300 (3 or 6 percent of $5,000) just from one family’s grocery bill. Multiply that family’s earnings by, say, 10 families and you’ve got $1,500 to $3,000 for HUU. With the right support, scrip earnings can really add up. Imagine what we could do if everyone supported our Scrip program!!
Kroger has added the recharge feature to their gift card. Once you buy a card from HUU, you can recharge it at the store (using your credit card, check or debit card). HUU still gets credit and if you have a frequent flyer card, you still earn miles. Food Lion does NOT have this feature.
Scrip is available every Sunday before and after the regular service or give Elinor a call to make other arrangements.
