Become a Member of HUU

Intentional membership in a Unitarian Universalist congregation is a relationship of covenant.  This covenant moves us in two directions at once:

  • an inward direction, toward the better selves we can become,
  •  and an outward direction, toward the better world we can create.

We consciously engage these movements of life in our works of sense-making, care-giving and justice seeking.

Joining Harrisonburg Unitarian Universalists means making five commitments.  These commitments are promises we make to ourselves – they also comprise the covenant we make with all other members: ·

  • presence and participation in the life of the congregation
  • fair share contribution of time, talent, or treasure
  • right relationship with all members
  • leadership and service as skills and circumstances allow
  • spiritual growth as the goal of individual religious practice

In keeping these promises we are mutually supported and joined together by our faith/trust in personal inspiration/revelation, the power of community to effect change, and the ability of humankind to heal, repair, and transform the world.

Membership is signified by signing our HUU Covenant Book.  This takes place in a large or small communal service where all are invited to speak an elaboration of the covenant promises listed above.  Names of individuals who leave our community remain in our membership book, but are removed from our Member List and Membership Directory.

Making an annual financial pledge is an important spiritual practice that HUU strongly encourages.  But pledge amounts and contribution frequency are left to the discretion of each individual member acting in accordance with conscience and commitment to UU values.

As a local congregation, Harrisonburg Unitarian Universalists provides support to the Unitarian Universalist Association according to the names of listed members, updated annually.
